It’s hard to believe that summer is actually over. The weather is supposed to get warm again, but this morning it was definitely chilly out, with the leaves blowing down the street as kids hurried onto the bus for their first day of school. It really didn’t feel like we had a summer this year, so when the weather was nice this weekend, I tried to take full advantage of it.
We started our Labour Day celebrations earlier in the week when we went to our town’s screening of Back to the Future, just like we did last year. It was fun to see it again and hear the whole crowd cheer when George knocked out Biff.
We shared a bag of caramel corn, and Whiskey was happy to snatch up the popped kernels that fell to the ground. I wish they did this once a month, not once a year!
On Saturday evening, we went to my Aunt and Uncle’s annual Labour Day Corn Roast. It is usually chilly there on the water, but it ended up being great weather for a get-together with friends and family.
The corn is cooked in big pots over a fire – and it comes out perfect.
The food is always so good – roast beef, fresh corn, veggies, salads and of course mom’s infamous macaroni and cheese.
You would never know that we had a huge rain storm that morning. It was a great summer evening in the end.
It feels like we’ve missed so many farmers markets this year because we’ve been away when they’re on, so I was glad to go this weekend and stock up!
There was lots of freshly picked produce.
And delicious breads and baked goods.
Jams and preserves from this year’s harvest.
And LOTS of basil. You could smell it from down the street.
We popped into the library too for a couple of new cookbooks to try out.
Whiskey loves to go to the farmers market just as much as we do. I think it is his favourite walk every week – so many different dogs, people and smells.
I picked up a basket of roma tomatoes too add to the ones that Garrett’s parents gave us from their garden….
…and made it into homemade tomato sauce to freeze for the coming months. It came out so good!
I also had a bag of apples from a roadside stand to use up…
…and they became an apple crisp for when our friend came over for dinner last night.
With two guys coming up with last night’s menu, you know it involved lots of meat and more meat. I was happy to contribute a salad and some sauteed veggies (from Garrett’s parents’ garden) to the mix. Gotta get your veggies!
As sad as I am to see summer go, I’m so excited for fall. It is my favourite season and every week I have something fun planned that I’m really looking forward to, from blog conferences (BlogPodium and Blissdom Canada) to events in town, visit with friends/family and even a little road trip. Here’s to a great fall!
