Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

A simple, yet delicious chocolate frosting recipe that is perfect for cakes and cupcakes.
Serves: 3 cups frosting
  • 1 cup butter, softened to room temperature
  • 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted and cooled
  1. In a large bowl with a handheld or stand mixer, whip softened butter for 2-3 minutes or until fluffy.
  2. Gradually add in powdered sugar on low setting, and mix until well combined, about 3 minutes.
  3. Scrape down sides and blend in vanilla
  4. Slowly add cooled chocolate while the mixer is on medium speed.
  5. Continue to whip for 3-4 minutes or until the frosting is creamy and fluffy.
  6. Makes enough frosting for a sheet cake, an 8" layer cake or 24 cupcakes.
  7. Note: If refrigerating this frosting, you may need to let it come to room temperature and whip it with an electric mixer for 1-2 minutes before using it to frost a cake/cupcakes.
