Today is one of my favorite days of Summer. The chance to celebrate this great country that I am lucky enough to live in. I think of all those brave people who made our country what it is today. I think of my ancestors who worked the land. I think of people like my grandfather who fought for us to have the freedom and safety that we do. I think of the refugees who arrive every day and are given the chance to start a new life. As much as I love travelling to other places, I can’t think about living anywhere else.
Every few years, my family has hosted a Canada Day party, where neighbours and friends come over to eat hot dogs, lick ice cream cones and cannonball into the pool. One picture from those parties has always been stuck in my mind, and I found it recently while going through some old boxes.
Its late at night at our old house. A small fire pit is going (probably for s’mores) and my little sister (about 2 years old here) quietly slumbers on a cushion outside, under the flag. It always looks like such a peaceful scene, while I’m sure that just outside the frame of the photo there is udder chaos as kids run around throwing water balloons and taking popsicle breaks.

Today, I plan to celebrate with a nice quiet day off with friends. The cellphone is tucked away in the tent. The computer is miles away at the apartment (I set up this weekend’s posts before I left). My biggest decision today will be which bathing suit to wear when I jump in the lake.
