Garden Outdoors

Our Little Community Garden

This past week, Garrett and I became the proud owners of a plot at our local community garden. Some people didn’t end up using their plots this year and lucky for us, my mom heard about this and put our names in for a plot. It’s getting a little bit late in the season for planting, but we’ll see what happens!

There aren’t many vegetables left at the garden centers, but I was lucky enough to find a few plants at various shops around town. It just so happens that they were on sale too, so I was able to get all our plants for under $15.

Even though it is getting late in the season, we’re also going to try and grow from peas and see how they do. We passed on the green beans because we ran out of space, but hopefully we can use them next year!

As soon as we started tilling up the plot, we found our first little friend. Hello toad 🙂

Whiskey came along to “guard” the garden from any wayward squirrels. He also liked being greeted by all the runners that come through the paths nearby.

After an hour of tilling and planting, we ended up with this – our first vegetable garden!

We have 2 rows of peas (that will hopefully sprout) and then we will put up some stakes and string to help them grow.

Cauliflower and Cabbage

Broccoli and Brussel Sprouts

Eggplant

Tomatoes

Parsley

Green Peppers

Hot Peppers

We’re lucky enough to be close by, so we can bike over a couple times each week for watering and weeding. It’s only been a week and it’s already looking good. Even if we only get one or two things out of it, we’ve only invested $15 into the project and it will give us a chance to play around with what works and what doesn’t for when we have our own vegetable garden someday.

I’ll keep you all posted on how things are going, and I have a few little garden-related projects that I’m working on right now too. I love new hobbies!
