Garden Outdoors

Vegetable Garden Update

Last night we headed over to our vegetable garden to check up on things. We’ve been steadily watering it every other day (unless it rains) and everything has been growing really big and tall so far.

We have our lattice fence around the sides to prevent our friendly neighbourhood rabbit getting into it (although he has eaten all the pea leaves that peek through the fence).

Speaking of peas, they are growing big and lush. Now we just need some blooms to turn into pea pods!

The actual vegetables that have grown much are these hot peppers that are getting pretty big. So far we have about 12 growing between the 4 plants.

Everything else is just in the early stages, but we knew it would be a late harvest considering that we didn’t even get our plot until about a month ago. So we’ll just keep watering and weeding and hopefully we’ll have something to harvest next month!

Some of our neighbouring plots have been doing pretty well too.

Big red hot peppers.

Cute little watermelons.

Tender greens.

Even a local school group’s neglected tomatoes have been growing tall.

The beginnings of some funny shaped tomatoes.

In other veggie-related news, I’ve been trying to dry out the husks from our weekly corn on the cob to use for fall crafts, but I haven’t quite got a method down pat. When I put them in the oven, they shrivel up, but we don’t have enough sun on the porch to bleach them over the next few weeks. Anyone else try this before? Suggestions?
