Happy (and Chilly) Friday! It is so cold in Ontario this week. I actually gave in and wore SOCKS last night when we went to dinner with Garrett’s family. This doesn’t feel like August at all – are you getting crazy weather like this too?
There are only a few precious weeks of summer left and I’m not ready to let them go that easily. As much as I love fall and all its coziness…I know the reality of what comes afterwards (and I’m not talking about Christmas, because I love that too). I have to admit that last night I gave in and lit my new apple candle. I just couldn’t help it. If we have any more days like this, I’m going to start getting the itch to make some homemade soups!

Last Friday, I mentioned that we were planning to go to the fair near my hometown. I’ve gone since I was a kid and it’s always fun to see the displays…especially the petting area.
These Polish chickens were hilarious – with their pom-pom feather heads that bobbed back and forth.
There was also the sweetest calf, that reminded me a little of our Cola.
Fluffy bunnies!
A curly haired calf having dinner. I think it’s great that they have displays like this that let kids get close to the animals.
These sheep made me want to watch the movie Babe again. I just picture them talking, ha!
We went on Saturday night to catch the monster truck show, but didn’t get seats, so we stood on the sidelines for a bit until we realized that we couldn’t see anything. Off to the beer tent instead! I ran into some old friends from high school I hadn’t seen in awhile and it was nice to catch up.
We didn’t do any of the rides, games or junk food, but it’s always fun to walk through all the flashing lights and ringing bells. It brings back memories of walking through the fair as a kid and being in such awe of all the spectacle. I can’t wait to share this experience with our own family someday and see it through their eyes.
I stayed over at my parents’ that night because it was a work night for Garrett and I wanted to hang out with mom to catch up. It was so nice to wake up to the sound of birds chirping and feel the breeze coming off the water. Mom’s garden is looking awesome this year, with these starburst lilies putting on a good show.
We made breakfast to go (egg sandwiches) and headed down to the dock for a Sunday morning boat ride. The water was so calm and we wondered if it was maybe because of the supermoon the night before.
Shadow used to be so nervous on the boat, but now she is a seasoned pro and loves to watch the world go by.
Once we were back on shore, I headed over to my aunt and uncle’s cottage for lunch with my aunt while we talked about making her a website for her pottery.
This was my view while I worked away on my laptop in the dining room. I could get used to an office like this.
A few hours later we had her brand new website up and running. I used the same theme that I use for the blog, but reworked it to create an artist’s website. I love how different you can make it look, with new colours, font and layout.
She had to go out to her studio around back to check on a few pieces that are drying, so I tagged along to take a peak at what she’s working on.
I absolutely love her pottery and am lucky enough to have a few treasured pieces in my collection. They’re not only beautiful in form, but also function. You may have even spotted them a few times on the blog!
Visiting their cottage also means I get to say hi to my family’s old 1955 Chevy pickup that we picked up in Dallas on our Route 66 road trip in 2005.
It was a beat up dark green truck with “Don’t Mess with Texas” stickers on it when my uncle bought it from us and he has since had it spruced back up with a great new paint job, carpeting, seats and new wood boards in the flatbed.
I just love a good classic car.

We’re driving up to our friend’s cottage right now – Garrett’s driving and I’m working away on the laptop while we listen to an 80s station with Bruce Springsteen blasting. It has hardly felt like summer all week, so here’s hoping that the weather smartens up for the rest of the weekend!
What are you up to this weekend? Making the most of the last couple weeks of summer?
