Winter

A Long Weekend of Recovery

For over a week now I’ve been battling a serious cold. With a lowered immune system from the pregnancy, it seems that I just can’t shake this thing! Thankfully we had a long weekend here with Family Day on Monday, which gave me some more time to stay at home and rest.

It was a brutally cold weekend, with the temperatures dipping down to -30C at one point. It made it much easier to stay inside and rest up. With the exception of a few trips out for errands, I tried to stay inside the whole time.

The dogs were happy to have us all together for the weekend and were even uncharacteristically affectionate with each other. It could have been Valentine’s Day or Family Day that inspired them…but I think it was just the cold weather.

After days of drinking just tea and soup, it was nice to eat some real food this weekend, including sharing these unbelievably good cupcakes from Sullivan and Bleeker. The cookie dough one was the best, with red velvet bringing in a close second.

The chickens continue to give us four eggs a day, so we did a big breakfast on Saturday morning together (with a few extras cooked up for the dogs too).

I did manage to pull together a last-minute Valentine’s Day dinner together at home – pan-fried marinated steak (definitely not barbecuing in this weather), twice baked potatoes and caesar salad.

We didn’t really do gifts this year as we’ve got so much we’re working on around the house, so we kept our gifts to thoughtful acts for each other. I made Garrett a homemade vanilla cake (his favourite)…

…and he installed the new faucet for the upstairs bathroom. Exactly what I wanted!

I’m still on the mend, and trying to take it easy with lots of tea and sleep, but I’m hoping to have some time and energy this weekend to work on some new projects around the house. Sometimes you need just take it easy and give yourself the break that your body is so clearly forcing you to take. Hope you’re all happy and healthy right now and steering clear of all the bugs floating around!
