Garden Spring

Getting My Hands Dirty

I’ve been crazy with work lately, but yesterday evening I decided to step away from the desk and head outside to get my hands dirty.

The front gardens of my apartment building have been getting more and more overgrown with weeds, but I kept putting off clearing them up. I decided enough is enough and dug right in.

They started out like this.

And then soon they looked like this. All ready for some flowers to be planted tonight.

Most of that mess is weeds. Some were so big they deserved their own postal code. Lots of heavy pulling, trimming and one bent trowel later…

  …it finally looked like this.

The peonies are looking great and I really hope that they blossom soon.

When are you going to come out?

It only took an hour and a half, but I think it looks much better. I even got to chat with some of my neighbours that I never see. I’m really excited to get some bright colours in their soon to distract from the awful pink brick and beat up front porch 🙂

I even had some leftover soil to fill a few pots to grow some fresh herbs! I have an herb garden every Summer and its one of the things I look forward to the most. Fresh basil is my favorite and I love using it in my Pomodoro Sauce. Hopefully I can freeze some too!

Its a complete mystery (to me) what I’m planting this year because my friend Amy is picking stuff up for me today from the nursery. I kind like the idea of a surprise!
