On Saturday morning, the boyfriend and I woke up bright and early to head over to the market with his grandmother. She goes every week and knew all the best vendors to go to.
There were rows and rows of fresh produce. I wish I’d been able to grab some to take back to the city with us, but I was afraid of squashing it in my suitcase.
If these tomatoes tasted half as good as they looked, I would have loved to have them in a salad or a sauce.
I was also eyeing the kettle corn. After getting my first taste of it last Summer, I’ve been hooked on that great sweet and salty flavour.
There were some beautiful flowers that were blossoming as well. All the vivid colours were a welcome sight after the long winter.
These are the first of the fresh local strawberries coming out. Within the next few weeks we’ll be seeing more and more!
I loved all the different varieties! My favourite treat these days is a slice of amazing bread, spread with delicious no-sugar added jam. Maybe one year I’ll even make some of my own.
There were also some great food vendors in the area as well. This wood-burning pizza oven was my favourite.
The flatbreads came out thin, crisp and super flavourful. I really want to get using my new pizza stone soon, so that I can get in on this action!
There was also a crepe making vendor that was making some amazing looking dishes. I would have loved to try to banana foster one!
The rows of fresh veggies reminded me of how much I love produce. The colours and the crisp flavours are right up my alley.
Even these radishes caught my eye. I didn’t used to like radishes, but lately I’ve been loving them in salads. The boyfriend’s grandma kept convincing me to buy a bundle because she bought them last week and they were really good, but I didn’t take her up on the suggestion. I really should have, because now I want them! Listen to your elders, right?
There is nothing like real Canadian Maple Syrup. It is probably my favourite natural sweetener, with honey coming in at a close second.
These hanging baskets were gorgeous. I love the beautiful flowers trailing down the sides. These are sure to brighten up any patio or entrance.
We brought the dogs along (my pup Whiskey and his parents’ dog Jake) for some fresh air. They were both happy to sniff all the great smells of the market and I was right there with them.
Basil! The best fresh herb around. I’ve got some of this growing in the garden window right now and I can’t wait to start using it.
There were plenty of more herbs for planting, as well as some big rhubarb plants. Someday I want a nice big vegetable garden, and I can guarantee you that I’ll have rhubarb in there!
We couldn’t go through the market without picking up a few little treats, so we headed over to a bakery area.
I couldn’t eat anything because of my allergies, but the boyfriend was happy to pick up the slack and sample some coffee and cookies.
I’m hoping to head out to another farmer’s market this afternoon and grab some more produce for the week. Its easy to eat healthier when you’ve got great options like this!

There’s a new farmer’s market on Rye campus Tuesdays 3:30-7:30. The farmer I get my CSA from has a stand there. It might be worth checking out sometime, if you’re in the mood for a longer walk/run/bike ride
