Craft Tutorial Decor

Painting Birdhouses

I’ve always been a fan of cute little birdhouses, so when I found some plain wooden ones at the local dollar store, I knew I had to bring them home to have fun painting. To start off, I sanded all the birdhouses and then put a couple of layers of shellac on them to seal them.

Garrett was happy to get in on the fun too and painted a couple of birdhouses himself. Whiskey’s contribution was to curl up behind us and sleep the afternoon away – he’s always a huge help on projects like this.

To apply the acrylic paint, I used a foam roller for even coverage and a few small brushes for smaller areas. Originally I was going to paint them really strong colours, but in the end I stuck with a lighter pastel palette. They great thing about acrylic is that if I change my mind, I can just repaint them!

For now I have them resting on top of the bookshelf in the living room as a little display with some birds, but I’m planning to hang them up outside properly next year.

For now I’m happy to just get to look at them. Any excuse to have out some of my favorite bird figures, right?

Now that I’ve got the creative bug again I’m looking for some fun projects to start in time for Fall. Any suggestions? I’m always open to fun ideas!
