Summer

Officially the Long Weekend!

I was lucky enough to get today off from work, which means that I get a four day weekend because it is Victoria Day Weekend up here in Canada. It’s the unofficial start of the Canadian summer and is a popular weekend for people to open up their cottages, plant gardens or get out of town. It always falls on the weekend before Memorial Day in the U.S.

Why is it called Victoria Day Weekend? Well, we’re still a member of the British Commonwealth, so the Queen is our head of state and we celebrate Queen Victoria’s Birthday. Her actual birthday is May 24th (also my birthday), so sometime we call it May 24th Weekend, May Long Weekend or May Two-Four, even if it doesn’t actually fall on May 24th.

Two-Four is also significant because our beer usually comes in 24 packs…which are perfect for a long weekend….and many of them are consumed then.

Growing up I used to think that the fireworks, parties and bonfires were all for me because of my birthday that week. To be honest, sometimes I still do 🙂

For me, this weekend is about getting everything ready for Summer, enjoying drinks out on patios with friends and lots of tasty BBQ. This morning I headed outside with Whiskey to clean off the patio and make plans for the new garden this year.

Whatever you do this weekend (whether you have 2, 3 or 4 days off), I hope you get to head out and enjoy the awesome weather. Its going to be a good one 🙂
