Craft Tutorial Decor DIY

Spring Couch Update

When we first moved in last October, the weather was starting to get cool, so I switched my futon to it’s dark raspberry coloured microsuede cover. Looking back at how messy it was back then, it reminds me of how far its come since then. This was during our first week when we still were living out of suitcases and boxes.

Now that the weather is getting nicer out, its time for a spring update! In the warmer months I like to use a great custom made futon cover I brought through Tonic Living (same company I bought the fabric from for the Recovered Dining Room Chairs and DIY Roman Blinds). It’s made of a strong canvas that keeps its shape and is still has vibrant as it was when I bought it 3 years ago for about $90.

This is what the futon cover used to look like at the old apartment. I just reused my black and leaf pillow covers from the previous winter and never got around to finding fabric to make summer coloured pillows that matched the stripe pattern.

Finally, I found some amazing fabric last week that worked perfectly with the robin’s egg blues, browns and tans. I loved the paisley pattern and wanted those pillows out front, but I also think the more neutal coloured geometric flower pattern works well for the other pillows.

I found some time over the weekend to make the pillow covers using my Simple Cushion Cover Tutorial. They were so quick to whip up and were a perfect fit. Sewing isn’t always like this for me – often it’s a fair bit of trail and error.

Here are the pillows on the futon cover now. I didn’t show the rest of the room in the shot because we’re still working on the living room right now and I hope to give a proper tour soon.

What do you think? The back pillows are a little more stiff and add some structure to the couch, but the front ones are still soft and comfortable.

Whiskey liked the pillows too and now that I see this photo I realize that he actually matches them with all his brown and tan.

My two best guys put the pillows to the test this weekend for an Sunday afternoon nap. I think they gave two thumbs/paws up on them.

Hi I recently purchased new furniture and my accent pillows are the identical match to this particular fabric I went on tonic livings site and couldn’t find it. Could you please tell me the name of the fabric so I may locate it. Thank you in advance for your help

The futon cover cover is made by Tonic Living, but the pillow covers were made with upholstery fabric from a sale at Fabricland at the time. I haven’t seen it there since then.

Ya I’m looking for the striped fabric it’s an identical match to my new throw pillows. I have an app I can use to do a identical image search and it only leads me to your site. Thank you.

I went through my old email and found the original receipt – yay! It was called “Farrow, Spa”. I couldn’t find it on the Tonic Living website, but I see it here on this one, called “Farrow Chocolate”. Good luck! http://ultramodern.com/lloyd-flanders-fabrics/
