Decor DIY Friday Favourites

Friday Favourites – 5 Awesome Bathroom Before and Afters

Happy Friday! I’m so excited for the long weekend. We’ve been away from home almost every weekend in August, so it’s nice to have some time to be at home and relax for a change. I’m hoping to get a head start on some food prep for the busy weeks ahead and spruce up the decor a bit. I love making our home feel nice and cozy for fall.

Speaking of home decor, a friend of mine has been brainstorming how she wants to redo her builder’s grade bathroom and turn it into something that suits her taste and her family’s needs. For this week’s Friday Favourites, I thought I’d share 5 awesome bathroom before and afters, including our own mini bathroom makeover at the apartment. It doesn’t take much to make a bathroom go from blah to wow!

1. Our Bathroom Makeover

When we first moved into our apartment, the bathroom had very little storage (under the sink and in the medicine cabinet) and was all boring white. We’re renting, so we couldn’t do anything that was too permanent and it needed to be on a small budget because we didn’t want to put a lot of money into something we don’t own.

We started out by making a set of three bathroom shelves for $12. We had the tops precut at the hardware store, painted the brackets and then assembled them. They are resting on screws in the wall, so they are easy to remove when we move someday. They are great for storing face cloths, extra toliet paper and beauty supplies, but they also give some space to add a little decor too.

The towel bar that was already in the bathroom was broken and couldn’t actually hold a towel, so we took it down and replaced it with a set of bathroom hooks. I recently added the “Splish Splash” DIY Vintage Wooden Sign for a fun touch too.

2. Live Creating Yourself – Wood Paneling

Anyone that has gone through a tour of an older home can lament about all the wood paneling you’ll find. It seems to be everywhere.

This is the “before” of Alaina’s bathroom – full of dark wood paneling which closes off the space.

And here is the after! The white paint completely transforms the space from dark and dingy to bright and beautiful.

The bright white towels and simple decor almost give it a spa-like feel.

3. The Lettered Cottage – Country Bathroom Makeover

Everything that Layla and Kevin do looks amazing, but this bathroom makeover they recently did in their home is one of my all-time favourites.

It started as a simple beige/tan bathroom…

…and turned into a bright and eclectic space with so many details to admire.

From the handmade soaps, to the ladder towel rack and the sea blue paneled walls, this is a lovely space.

4. 320 Sycamore – Master Bathroom Makeover for under $1000

You would not even recognize Melissa’s bathroom in this before and after. They look like they’re from two totally different homes. Keeping to a budget of $1000, she and her husband gave the entire bathroom a much needed face lift.
I love how she used neutral greys, white and earth tones with lots of texture to add dimension to the room. There is plenty of storage solutions for their busy family too – a must in a bathroom in a high traffic area of your home.

5. Mandy Jean Chic – Free Pallet Wall Feature

I’ve seen pallet walls featured in bedrooms and nurseries, but never in a small scale bathroom like this. It adds great texture and depth to the room – and it’s free! I love the addition of the wreath too. You could make it seasonal!

I’m looking forward to the day when we own our home and can make all the changes that we’d like. There are some great things about renting, but I can’t wait to put our own touches on our home and make it feel like us. For now, I’ll just keep making our apartment feel like home – one throw pillow at a time. Have a nice long  weekend!
