The last month or so I’ve been really starting to pull together everything for the baby’s nursery. We’re hoping to have more kiddos in the future, so the plan was to keep most things pretty neutral, from the wall colour to the crib and furniture, and then add in some delicate more feminine touches. Hopefully if we have a boy the next time around, it will be a pretty easy switch. I’ll be sharing more about the room makeover in the coming months, but for now here is a little snippet of what we’re going for:
- Colour Palette – We originally were planning to paint the room but quickly realized that we actually liked the light purplish grey colour that the previous owners had used. It’s close to Opera from Behr Paint. All the window and door trim is white and we’re using accent colours in Stolen Kiss, Pale Cucumber and Frittata, The rest of the farmhouse is in neutral colour palettes with texture, so it made sense to keep that same design style in the nursery too.
- Crib – My parents surprised us with the Dream On Me “Eden” convertible crib and mattress, along with the cutest organic Peter Rabbit crib sheets from Pottery Barn Kids. I’m also working on a mobile to hang above the crib.
- Curtains – I have always loved the Matilda Sheer Curtains from IKEA. They are the same curtains we used in the upstairs hallway and I love the sheer material with delicate stitching. We’re installing a blackout roller to go along with it to keep the room dark when needed.
- Dresser – I was able to find a big long solid wood dresser for sale in our town for only $25! We’re going to paint it the light pink colour and use it as a changing pad area on top. This is the one big feminine piece that we’re doing, but if we have a boy next time, this dresser will move with her to her own room. {Click here to see the Nursery Dresser Makeover!}
- Wire Basket of Blankets – We’re putting up some shelves for books, but for the most part I plan to use various sized baskets to hold blankets, toys, etc.
- Bunnies Everywhere – While picking things for the nursery, it became very apparent that I liked the idea of bunnies. From Peter Rabbit to these cute Jellycat Bunnies, I think they’re a nice touch for a farmhouse inspired nursery. It was a real toss up between that or baby chicks (loving the new Pehr Designs “Freshly Hatched” line), so they may just end up in there too.
- Floor Pouf – Whether we buy one or I make one, I’d really like to have a big fabric or knit pouf for putting my feet up while nursing, or for baby to pull herself up on later.
- Rocking Chair – I’m excited to have a few heirlooms in the room, including our own childhood teddy bears, favourite baby books and the rocking chair my mother used with me and all my siblings. For years it sat on my great grandmother’s veranda, until she passed away around the time I was born. It was the only thing my dad asked for from the house, and he lovingly removed layers upon layers of paint to refinish it. It’s a beautiful solid wood piece and with a new rocking chair cushion, it will be the perfect spot for bedtime stories and last night feedings. It’s crazy to think that our little baby will be the fifth generation to sit in it!
- Framed Artwork – There are so many great artists on Etsy where you can get lovely nursery artwork like this sweet little bunny from Trafalgar Square. I’m hoping to get a few pieces to hang up throughout the room.
We’re down to the last few months to get this room ready! I can hardly wait to have it all finished and ready to bring her home.
