Country Ontario

Hoedown

Last week I was invited to attend a hoedown to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation. Apparently Brooks and Dunn were right when they said that you can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl, because the second that I was invited to this event I was digging out my boots.

Some friendly volunteers were at the door to greet guests and hand out bandanas. It was quite the blizzard outside that evening, so we were all happy to get inside and warm up.

The event was held at the beautiful WatersStone Estate and Farms in King Township and they had the entire ball room set up for some good ole’ country fun.

I’m in love with this flower arrangement! The milk jug! The gorgeous flowers! The straw hat!

The food was fantastic and all from local farms. Nice BBQ with all the fixin’s. I’m not usually a big potato salad fan (I like mine vingeary and other people tend to make it mayonnaisey…and yes I do realize that those are not real words) but I tried a bit here and had to go back for more.

Don’t even get me started on the roasted root vegetables. I’ve already put parsnips on this week’s shopping list.

There was also a great selection of local wines and beers. And plenty of interesting fruit flavoured wine, like this Cranberry Apple. I seriously could have tried every one of these, but thankfully it was a weeknight and I knew better.  The King Brewery Pilsner was also nice and went really well with the food. I’m going to have to keep an eye out for it next time I’m at the Beer Store.

There were people from all over this agricultural community who are a part of this fantastic initiative, including some local farmers from the Holland Marsh. Growers in the area have been working hard to direct as much of their crop as possible to local rather than export markets, and it’s great to see everyone come together for a fun night out.

Another gorgeous arrangement. The bandana really adds some festive fun to it, but the vibrancy of those red flowers against the brown and sand colours of the room made it pop.

Doesn’t this just make you want to grab a chair and one of those beers and kick up your feet? (and maybe some more of that potato salad too!)

But there was no time for sitting back and relaxing because this wouldn’t be a hoedown without a bit of square dancing, now would it?

I apologize for the blurry pictures, but it was quite the action going on. There was a live band playing with a real square dance caller and everyone really got into the spirit.

And of course I had to wear these boots. I bought these BCBGeneration Citrus Boots in the Fall and I’ve been loving them every since. Perfect boots for a hoedown!

Great boots! Love that they utilized food from local farms. Looks like it was a lot of fun on a wintery day!
