Garden Spring

Into the Swamp

When you walk along my parents’ property, you come to a steep edge…

…and when you look over the edge you can see the ravine that leads to the river. Right now it looks pretty barren, but come Summer and this will be full of plants and sheltered by a big canopy of trees.

The trees are already starting to show signs that they are getting ready to come out.

The little fiddleheads are starting to uncurl.

The water’s edge is lush with wild watercress.

Our province’s native flower, the Trillium, is starting to appear.

I helped my mother transplant these Trilliums that were destined to be destroyed at a local forest. Now they are in the ravine, with another Summer to grow. We found them when I was down there this weekend helping her plant some more indigenous species.

There are plenty of foliage down there that I have no idea what it is.

Or this rock with cool, mossy stuff on it.

Up close it almost looked like a whole different world.

Another fun find down by the river was this dogwood bush that appears to have been eaten by something. Can you take a guess at what did this?

Why it was none other than our national animal – The Beaver!

Look at all the bites that he had to take to get those big branches. Those must be some big teeth.

I love going down to the ravine and river to see what is growing there. Its going to be great to watch it get lush as the Summer gets closer. Here’s to warmer weather!
