Dogs Family University

A Long and Busy Weekend

Twice this weekend I woke up early to make fresh Banana Bread. No, it wasn’t because we had lots of bananas around (which we did, and I used some to make that amazing Banana Chocolate Chip Cake).

Maybe this will give you a hint. I was lovingly packing up the already sliced bread to send it off with two very important people in my life, who will be gone for a little while.

This weekend, my sister and brother both packed up to go away to university. We have officially all flown the coop now!

Saturday morning started with a mad dash to help my sister pack up this trailer to head to law school. Yep, my little sister is going to be a bona fide lawyer! She’s smart as a whip and can almost always win every argument we have, so I know she’ll do great.

It was a long 5+ hour trek to her law school, but thankfully her boyfriend was up for the drive. We wished her luck and waved them off.

After they left, I headed out to a flea market with a friend on the hunt for costumes for an upcoming birthday party. We did find what we were looking for, but it was quickly overshadowed by the greatest flea market find yet….

Pineapple Crush!
I’d never even heard of this stuff, but apparently it is really popular out East in Newfoundland. I’m usually more of a diet pop fan myself, yet I knew I had to try it. I’ll have to be on the lookout for this again!

Saturday night called for the annual Labour Day Corn Roast at my uncle’s cottage. Most years it is pretty cold and we’re all bundled, but this year it was hot and humid. It was a great last hurrah for Summer.

There is always great food and I get to catch up with all my cousins and family friends to hear how their Summers went and find out where they’re off to for the school year.

Sunday morning was another early start, as we got ready to take my brother to his first year at university. I don’t even know how we fit all that into the truck – it was so packed!

Whiskey seemed more than a little concerned about all the fuss going on.
While Shadow was happy to take a nap on the long 5+ hour drive to school.

When we finally arrived it was quick work emptying out the truck and we started hauling everything up to his dorm room. It brought back so many memories of my first weekend at Queen’s.

The dogs seemed the happiest to have all the stuff out of the truck, but they were a little worried about us leaving my brother behind in a weird place.

While my brother set up his electronics (the important stuff to a guy, right?), my mom and I tried to decorate the place up a little bit and make it homey. Rather than have a plain duvet, he got this great bright red duvet cover and some accents in black and tan. The London pillow was a last minute find which had some great pictures of places we went to on our trip a few years ago. By the time we left, it looked like a a nice and comfy space where he can hopefully get lots of studying done 🙂

It was a long two days of frantically packing everyone and lots of goodbyes. I may or may not have gotten a bit teary when we left my brother. What can I say? He’s still the baby and I’ll miss him to bits. Monday was supposed to be a day to recharge and maybe go out in the boat, but the weather went from hot and humid to bitterly cold over night. There was no way I was going to get on a boat!

So, instead I called up a good friend and we went to go see The Help. I read the book last Summer and loved it. I’ve been dying to get out to see the movie, but its been such a chaotic few weeks. Yesterday was the perfect day to go see it. Its such a wonderful story and I’m so glad that the filmmaker’s were able to make an adaptation that was not only true to the book, but also gave readers a greater glimpse into this world.

Now its back to the city and work for me. The Toronto International Film Festival starts up later this week and I still haven’t picked any movies to go see! If anyone has heard of any great films coming to the festival this year, please let me know!
