Home Decor at the Bookstore

Yesterday afternoon, I headed out to pick out a book for a friend’s birthday and made my way over to Indigo Books.

The second I walked into the store, I saw the awesome spring home decor display and all efforts of looking for a book were put on hold. Just like Anthropologie, Indigo is one of those stores that really knows how to set out a display, and I’m always impressed with the selection they have, although the prices can be a bit steep sometimes. But if you keep an eye out for sales and clearance items you can find some great pieces. Over the years I’ve found a number of pieces that I love on sale for really reasonable prices.

 I got my olive green fabric napkins there during the after Christmas sale for $7.50 for a pack of 4.

I also found my Andy Warhol print of John Wayne for $12 in the clearance bin. You can see it here in the bedroom at the old apartment (it still doesn’t have a home yet in the new one).

 And just last month I found this Capiz frame on their online store for $6.13 down from $24.50

I’ve really been digging green and neutral tones this year and they had plenty of that on display.

This wooden box with an olive green inlay would have been perfect for the side table in the dining room, with the newly recovered chairs.

I love love love this fabric! I wish I could find it to make new throw pillows in the bedroom. After having bright gold and burnt orange in there all winter, I’m looking for something much more mellow and relaxed, and this fabric definitely has that in spades.

Its hard to see in this picture, but the pattern almost looks painted on, with subtle brush strokes. Really pretty.

It also looks great when paired with the watercolour-like green pillow, although Garrett thought it was camouflage when I showed him the picture on my phone. Maybe not the best choice for the soothing vibe I’m going for.

These vases are gorgeous, with their various patterns. Lately I find myself drawn more and more to texture, in particular the orb-like vases in the centre….and then I realized why…its because I have one just like it at home in silver and bronze. Now I want to dig them out again and put them to good use!

Speaking of texture, how great is this linen matting in that frame. A little darker than I’d like, but this would be great with some botanical prints in a linen colour.

See, I told you I’m drawn to texture right now! From the wood grain trays, to the wire and bubbled glass lanterns and to the twig and woven straw decorative balls. Its everywhere!

I also adored this fluted ceramic bird house, until I realized it looked like a cyclops onion.

More capiz frames! Katie Bower needs to head over and grab one of these for her collection!

I wish all bath products came in vintage style bottles with decorative labels like these. It would make every bathroom look so pretty.

I was also drawn to the kitchen stuff, although thankfully I can resist this more because I’m pretty well stocked up there and don’t have much storage left.

Although how much storage would these bowls actually take, right?

After taking my time through the home decor, I finally came to the actual books in the bookstore.

Low and behold I found two of my favourite things – Pioneer Woman and Taste of Canada.

Then it all took a turn for the worse when I entered the kids section and found this horrible book from my childhood. Robert Munsch was one of my favourite authors growing up, but this book used to give me nightmares as a kid. I actually ended up donating it to the school library so I wouldn’t even have it in my room. For years the librarian would thank me for my “kind donation” and I never had the heart to tell him it was him doing me a favour.

The story is about a little girl who goes fishing on the sea ice, she has to use her wits to escape the Qallupillui, which are these horrible ice trolls that pull kids into the cracks of the water. I grew up on a river, so everytime I heard a crack in the ice (which is very common), I’d think it was the Qallupillui coming to get me. Lovely, right?

Despite that scary little trip down memory lane, I did find some books for gifts and I even picked up a little something for myself.

I love the subtle glitz of the pattern and after a quick little wash, it’ll look wonderful on my desk!
