This year is the first time that I have decorated our apartment for Fall. Last year was the big move in October, so I didn’t really have time to decorate my old apartment and by the time we got settled into the new one, it was time for Halloween decorations.
I’m loving the new Colourful Fall Wreath I put up out front, but I wanted to bring some of that Fall feeling inside too.
It’s been four years since I took this bookcase from my parents’ basement and I’m still using it as a makeshift mantel in the living room. It’s the perfect place to display some fun seasonal decor.
I tried to go with natural colours this year – greens, yellows, browns and creams, with little pops of orange.
It all started with this window framed mirror that Garrett’s parents picked up for us at a garage sale. It looks like it used to be a window that someone put mirrors into the window panes. I love the warm honey colour of the wood.
Next I added in the IKEA lamp that we picked up for our little porch makeover in the summer.
I found another smaller lamp on clearance at Kitchen Stuff Plus for $5, so I picked it up too. It reminds me of ones that I’ve seen at Pottery Barn for $35-50 each. The pinecones are from my parents’ house years ago and I carefully wrap them up each season to preserve them.
A couple of weeks ago I was grocery shopping with Garrett and came across this beautiful creamy white pumpkin for $6. I physically could not walk away without putting it in the cart.
For some seasonal foliage, I went with three sticks of gold and red berry sticks from the dollar store and popped them into a metal pail.
The pumpkins are a combination of dollar store finds and a great discount at Michael’s last week. The pale green lopsided one is my favourite!
Every time I sit in the living room and look up, I get a smile on my face. Although I have to admit that I still keep looking up there expecting to see the clock that used to be there. I need to find somewhere new to hang it up.
I also tidied up the bookcase by swapping out all the brighter coloured books for more reds, browns and neutral tones. And I framed a little red leaf in my capriz frame on the left.
Here is how I’ve decorated it the bookcase mantel in year’s past:

What a beautiful fall “mantle”! I don’t have a mantle either, so I have turned my buffet into a makeshift mantle. I like how you used things like the pinecones and dollar store finds as well as that cute white pumpkin!
