Garden

Easy Summer Planter for $4

Last summer, we had this awesome whiskey barrel planter that I put together with the advice of my favourite gardening centre. By this time last summer, it had grown even bigger and was tall, lush and gorgeous. I love it and had hoped to create something similar this summer….

…however time got away on me and before you know it, it’s July and I’ve done nothing to it. Despite planting the Salad Container Planters in May, I never got around to doing the whiskey barrel again and this is what it looked like until this morning when I finally tackled it before work. I don’t even know what those plants are – I think they may even be seedlings from the tree that hangs over the porch. Talk about a lovely planter, eh?

On a trip to the local home improvement store last night, I spotted these giant hanging baskets of petunias on clearance out front for $4. A planter that is already big and lush for cheap – I’ll take it!

All I needed to do was “dead-head” it, pinching off some of the dead blooms to help promote more growth.

I carefully removed the plant from the hanging basket it was in, and transplanted it right into the whiskey barrel with some fresh soil around it.

I gave it a big soak this morning and hopefully it will help it survive the transplanting and give it a much needed drink in this heatwave we’re having.

Garrett picked out this one because he loved that it already had some petunias that were trailing down the sides. I stuck the solar powered lights back in because they are great for lighting up the stairs on our way back from nighttime walks with Whiskey.

Speaking of Whiskey, he was happy to supervise this little project this morning and bask in some summer morning sun. I can pretty much guarantee you that he went back inside to lay in a sunbeam in the living room in front of the fan for the rest of the day. Oh to be a dog in summertime.

Nothing brightens up the porch like a big basket of flowers! I love the red and white together:)
