The Story I Will Tell Our Grandkids Someday

Last Wednesday, Garrett and I headed out with Whiskey on a walk through the conservation area near our home.

Garrett wanted to walk deeper into the forest, just as it was getting dark. At first it was fine, but after awhile I started to jump at every noise. I had visions of zombies jumping out of the woods and attacking us (obviously I must watch way too much of The Walking Dead. A guy whizzed by us on a scooter and I almost jumped out of my skin.

Little did I know that Garrett was trying to get us to a clearing up ahead, but seeing how much of a chicken I was being, he turned us back around to a field on the outskirts of the forest.

The sky was beautifully clear and with no light pollution, you could see some of the stars. We laid out on the grass together and talked about which ones we could see. Whiskey was on his long leash and walking around us (sniffing for squirrels) when Garrett asked me to close my eyes and make a wish…

…when I opened them up, he was holding this ring up over my head, sitting in among the stars. Even in the dark, I could see it sparkling. Then he asked me to marry him… and I said yes.

It was the perfect proposal for us. We’ve spent so much of the last two years since we moved here in this forest on the Oak Ridges Moraine. It’s where we grew our first vegetable garden together last summerΒ and where we go for walks on the trail system in all the different seasons. We’ve spent many an afternoon walking through here and talking about our future together. It was fitting that this is the place where he did it.

We’re both so excited for this next step together. Even though we’ve talked about this for years, it still feels so surreal to actually be engaged. Thank you to all our family and friends with your well wishes.

Wedding plans have already started (venue hunting right now), but for me I’m looking forward more to what comes afterwards – sharing my life with my best friend and someday starting a family together. I’m sure we’ll be sharing all the wedding details on here as we go.

We had a little dinner at home this weekend to celebrate (just the two of us…and Whiskey) and popped the cork on a bottle of champagne we were given as a gift a couple of years ago.

Here’s to a lovely life together…with our favourite pooch. I’m sure he wishes he could have had champagne too.

Oh I just love this! Congratulations! Great proposal and great ring!!! It’s such a fun time so enjoy every second of it. My advice would be to celebrate every little detail of wedding planning (it helps alleviate some of the stress) by getting some mini champagne bottles and just pop one open every time you do something exciting (i.e. decide on your venue, send your invites, get your first rsvp “yes” (and your first rsvp “no”), find your dress, or even just a random Tuesday because it’s a nice day) lol πŸ™‚

I love this idea! Now I need to go find mini bottles of champagne πŸ™‚ I enjoyed a nice glass of wine while I was looking up wedding things online last night. I can see this being a fun hobby for the next 8 months.
