Film Party

Hosting an Oscars Party (Plus a 2014 Oscars Voting Ballot!)

oscars-2014 (500x218)I always love watching the Oscars. For us film industry types, it’s our equivalent of the Superbowl. We get pumped up with all the pre-game fun (the dresses! oh, the dresses!), look forward to the opening number (Yay! Ellen!) and eagerly await to see who wins in the top categories (Come On, Bradley Cooper!). Some years I’ve gone over to friends’ houses to celebrate, while other years I’ve stay home to watch it from the comfort of the couch, but it always ends up being a fun night.

This year we’re having a low key night because we both work super early the next morning, but otherwise, I’d be having a party for it. I’m talking great food, a competitive ballot and getting all dolled up for the occasion.

1) FOOD!

Last year, we went to our friends’ place for an Oscar party, complete with a menu that played on the titles of the films.

There were great tasty dishes like “Joaquinoa Phoenix Salad”

and “Mango Unchained” Smoothies

Get punny with the titles of your dishes, or stick to some tried-and-true appetizers like Hot Artichoke Dip, Jalapeno Popper Pinwheels or Bacon Wrapped-Water Chestnuts. Rumor has it that Wolfgang Puck is serving salmon on flatbread shaped like Oscar statuettes and topped with caviar as one of his appetizers. Get creative with star and Oscar statuette cookie cutters!

 2) BALLOTS!

Making your guesses of who is going to win in each category is always a fun game for an Oscars party. Garrett and I even do it together when it’s just the two of us!

Minted has this awesome free printable ballot for making your selections. I’ve also been to Oscars parties where they have a large board for everyone to place their bets. The winner with the most correct answers get a fun prize.

Last year, we also made up some new things to bet on:

  • # of bombed jokes in the opening speech
  • # of winners crying during their acceptance speech
  • # of winners kicked off with the music cue
  • # of bleeps during speeched
  • # of shots of George Clooney in the audience
  • What time it ended

3) ATTIRE!

While watching the stars head down the red carpet, one could dress up themselves….or they could lounge in the comfiest yoga pants and admire all the chiffon and satin creations on screen. I know I’ll be watching it this year with the world’s messy top bun and a big cozy sweater.

But wouldn’t it be fabulous one day to dress up in a big poofy dress like Jennifer Lawrence. Brings back memories of my Cannes Film Festival days.
