Christmas Holidays Ontario Small Town Ontario

Our Christmas Date on Main Street Newmarket {Small Town Ontario}

A couple of weeks ago, Garrett and I looked at our calendar and realized that it was filling up pretty quickly with fun events with family and friends, but we wanted to plan something for just the two of us. We picked a weeknight to do some Christmas shopping on Main Street in Newmarket, Ontario and have dinner together in a cozy little restaurant.

Last Thursday we had a wicked snow storm in Southern Ontario, but it didn’t stop Garrett and I from heading out for that date night. If anything, the snow made it feel all the more festive!

The Town of Newmarket always puts up a lovely display of Christmas lights in the River Commons behind Main Street.

They’ve even set up an Ice Lounge by the outdoor skating rink with big recliner chairs, glowing lights and a fire pit. It was a little chilly to sit out there (and everything was covered in a foot of snow), but I could see how nice it would be to sit out here for a break from skating.

Our walk through the snow helped us work up an appetite, so we stopped in for some hot comfort food at The Goulash House.

We ordered perogies, a kettle of beef goulash and my favourite – chicken paprikash with spätzle. Thankfully there were tons of leftovers for us to take home for lunches the next day.

With full bellies, we decided to walk along Main Street and visit some of the shops all decorated up for Christmas. Haven Decor always has the best window displays.

Inside it was full of Christmas ornaments, cards and chocolates, as well as their usual antique treasures.

In the back, they have a lovely retro kitchen area set up. The black and white checked floors are my favourite!

I really love how this shop combines new with old, and there is always something different that catches me eye – like this cute vintage pink hand mixer!

I’ve walked by the Unwind Yarn Shop before, but I’d never stopped in. It’s such a cute store!

The shop is full of beautiful yarns in every colour you could think of. They also offer classes, a Thursday night free knitting night (where they’re there to help), free patterns and video lessons. Once I finish the scarf I’m working on, I’ll be heading back there in the New Year for some yarn for my next one.

At the back of the knitting shop is also The French Shop (beside the British Imports store too).

The French Shop was having a big sale and I got this biscuit jar for a steal. Garrett said we could get it as long as I promised to fill it with cookies, ha!

To wrap up our date night, we grabbed some hot chocolate and peppermint tea, and drove around to look at all the Christmas lights. With the fresh bed of snow, the lights glowed and made everything look so lovely.

It was just a couple of hours on a weeknight in December, but having some time for just the two of us to celebrate the Christmas season together was so nice, and a tradition that we hope to continue in years to come.

Oh my gosh ! 🙂 Gulyás house 🙂 It must be wonderful and tasty.
I didn’t know there is a Hungarian restaurant. If I would be in Ontario I’ll try it. 🙂

I wish you a Merry Christmas.
