In the past I’ve always moved with just 2-4 weeks notice. It’s been rushed and full of last minute packing. I thought that this whole 60 days thing would be great because it would give us lots of time to prepare for the move. I didn’t factor in one thing – waiting is really really hard. I feel like mentally we’ve already packed and moved. Our hearts and heads are already on that piece of land and we’re just twiddling our thumbs until it’s official.
- Purge – I already started going through all my books to give away and donate, and next up is the front hall closet. I don’t want to move anything that we can get rid of beforehand.
- Clean – With our landlord coming by for showings soon, I want to get the whole place in tiptop shape. It’s also a good idea to start taking down our picture frames and fill in any holes as we go. (Although thankfully we used command strips for almost all of them)
- Repair – There are always things that need to be fixed and repaired, like that chair leg that always wobbles. If we wait to do them when we get to the new place, they’ll probably end up pretty far down the list of reno projects.
All this time also gives us a chance to do something really fun – planning! No, seriously, we’re pretty obsessed about it over here right now. Our nighttime talks are filled with exciting topics like “fixing banister rails”, “naturalizing the property with indigenous plants” and my personal favourite – “painting stucco” (it’s gonna be a beaut!)
The big part of our plan is to get started right away when we move in and try to get as much done as we can on the outside while the warm weather is here. Every room needs work, whether it’s new carpeting and fresh paint, or a complete overhaul. There will be plenty to keep ourselves busy with! So maybe this waiting game isn’t so bad after all. I know that we’re going to put lots of of hours and hard work into that house to make it into the dream home we have talked about for so long – and maybe this waiting period is like the calm before the storm.
