Lately I’ve been noticing that our nice dishes we got for our wedding, were starting to get scratch marks from our cutlery. We’ve only used these plates for less than two years, so it was frustrating to already see them looking so worn out. I tried to make a paste out of baking soda and water like I usually do for cleaning odd scuffs, but it didn’t work as well as I’d hoped.
That’s when I gave in and tried an old product I’d heard of but never used…and it worked wonders!
Have you heard of Bar Keeper’s Friend before? You make a paste our of the powder with a little water and scrub with a paper towel…and voila! The scratches are gone! A little goes a long way and you hardly need to use any elbow grease. It says it’s non-toxic and is safe for our septic system, but I still took precautions and wore rubbing gloves while using this product.
Next I tried it on one of my casserole dishes that was getting scratches all over it.
I sprinkled a little in the dish and scrubbed with a damp paper towel making a paste, and it started to come off right away.
You can see the scratches on the left and that all the ones on the right had disappeared. After I finished getting off all the marks, I gave it a good wash with soap and water to be safe.
Next up I tried using the powder on this weird amber coloured varnish on the powder room sink. We know that the previous owners used this room to wash up while they were doing the house renovations to sell, and it looks like it’s maybe a type of varnish or epoxy that they used. I’ve tried getting it off with scratch pads, soaking it with vinegar, a baking powder paste and nothing worked.
I made a little paste of Bar Keepers Friend and water, and it came right off with some light scrubbing with a paper towel. I couldn’t believe it and neither could Garrett when I showed him.
I’ve since tried this method with great success on all the surfaces that get exposed to our hard well water – the fiberglass tub, glass shower walls and our stainless steel sink. Nothing has removed the hard water marks as easily and effectively as Bar Keepers Friend. I’m officially converted!
What great products have you found to help you with cleaning? I love a clean house, but I’m not a huge fan of actually doing the cleaning, so anything that makes it easier is awesome!

It actually never occurred to me that those marks in my casserole dishes could be removed. Thanks for the tip!

Like Julie I never realized that those marks on our plates are removable.. Now I have to see if they sell something similar to this in Europe as well 🙂
