It’s down to the last two weeks of the One Room Challenge and I’m starting to feel the crunch! In last week’s update I shared how we’d built new shelves in the closet, hung closet doors and then painted the closet interior and our bathroom vanity. Over the long weekend, we were focused on spending time with family and friends, so I didn’t get much done….aside from a little online shopping in the evenings while eating chocolate eggs 😉 There were lots of little bits and bobs I needed to make decisions on.
I have our shower curtain on the way, as well as the vanity lights (3 lights and 2 lights) and the bathroom hardware accessories. Our faucet, shower head and tub spout was already chrome, and we’d decided to keep them.
One part that I’d really been struggling with was what to use for vanity knobs, closet door knobs and dresser handles. After I’d painted the vanity, I’d just put the chrome knobs back on, but they kind of blend into everything in real life. When the wallpaper goes up, it will be lots of grey-blue tones here, so I wanted something different. I held up a black knob I already had, but it was too high contrast.
I also needed to find new handles for the dresser in the closet. They’re an odd size (64mm/2.5″) and I remember how hard it was to find good replacements when I’d painted the dresser in 2012. I would have kept the ones on there from before but the actual handle parts went missing on our move in 2015 and we never did find them.
I was having a hard time finding something different in the stores nearby, then I remembered getting good knobs and handles from Lee Valley years ago. They have an extensive collection, but I was finally able to narrow it down to these brass handles for the dresser and two different sizes of old brass art deco knobs and plates for the vanity and closet doors.
One afternoon during the kids’ naps, I tackled the mess inside the vanity. We store cleaning supplies here (with a childproof lock), along with the first aid kit and some bath things. The bottom was warped and stained when we got here, but I’d never done anything about it. Painting the outside of the vanity gave me the drive to clean up the inside too.
I found we had some leftover contact paper (funny enough, the same one I used in the dresser). The colours in it were an almost perfect match to the blues and greens I’m using – I love it when things work out that way. I’m going to pick up some more baskets from the dollar store to help corral everything under the sink.
Speaking of heading to the stores, I’ve had two little shoppers in tow with me this week. They’ve been such good sports as we pop in and out to pick up all the little things you forget you need during a renovation, like shims, screws, paint rollers, touch up paint, etc. It seems like every other day we remember there is somethings we need, or we start on an area and there is a complication, thanks for having a house that is 116 years old! Doesn’t matter how many times I try to remind myself what I need, there is always something I’ve missed.
This week’s big goals are finally hanging the wallpaper (I’m nervous AND excited!) and putting up the new lights. Wish me luck…and come back next week for the last update before the big reveal! Check out the One Room Challenge blog to see all the other participants as well.
