Making Mira’s Cropped T-Shirt Design

Mira’s top in “How It’s Done” is a playful twist on classic K-pop fashion — sporty, cropped, and full of attitude.

Start with a plain black t-shirt. Mark your desired crop length with chalk (around the waistline or slightly above) and cut evenly with a rotary cutter, quilter’s ruler and cutting mat. Fabric scissors work too.

Flip the t-shirt inside out and pin a 1/2″ hem. Using a sewing machine with black thread in a zig zag stitch, sew the hem. This will help prevent the t-shirt from fraying along the bottom.

I found a great Etsy account with Mira’s T-Shirt Design (along with Rumi’s jacket badge designs!). I printed it on regular paper first to figure out the correct size, then printed the final design on Iron-On Transfer Paper for Dark Fabric.

The t-shirt design came in a couple different background options, but I went with the black one so that the white elements of the graphic design would stand out.

Applying the Iron-On Design:

  1. Cut around the image carefully with fabric scissors to get rid of most of the negative space on the print.
  2. Heat iron on the hottest setting, without any steam. *make sure there is no water in your iron before starting*
  3. Place your t-shirt on a SOLID surface and use your iron to smooth out creases on the t-shirt (Do not use an ironing board, as it will be too soft)
  4. Peel your design from the backing paper. You can use tweezers to help you peel, as it can be a little difficult to get it started.
  5. Place your design on the t-shirt, facing upwards.
  6. Cover your design with the teflon paper included in the package
  7. Iron the design onto the t-shirt using heavy and even pressure, following the package instructions. For this t-shirt design and size, I ironed it for 2 minutes on the highest heat setting.
  8. Remove teflon sheet and voila! Your design is done!

We live in a colder climate, so a simple pink or nude leotard underneath the cropped t-shirt will keep trick-or-treaters warm!

Sewing an Easy DIY Yellow Skirt for a Mira Costume

Mira’s bright yellow skirt adds the perfect pop of color to her outfit. The great news? It’s super easy to make, even for beginners!

I chose a sunny yellow polar fleece fabric to make it cozy for our cooler weather, but you could use a lightweight cotton for warmer temps. The great thing about polar fleece, is you can leave an edge unhemmed and it will not fray.

I followed a free Simple A-line Skirt Pattern from We All Sew. Essentially, you cut a trapezoid shape based on the waist measurements and desired length.

Stitch up the two sides with either a serger sewing machine or a regular sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch. Fold over the top edge 1-1/4″ and make a casing for the 1″ elastic waistband, leaving a small opening to fish the elastic through. Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and use that to help you feed the elastic through the waistband casing. Pin elastic in place and check to make sure the skirt fits the waist snuggly. Once you have the right length of elastic, sew the two ends together and hand stitch the casing opening closed.

The great thing about polar fleece, is you can leave an edge unhemmed and it will not fray. Try on the skirt, determine the final length desired and then cut off any excess using a rotary cutter, quilter’s ruler and cutting mat.

To complete the kpop star look for Mira’s skirt, add a clip on silver chain and pin on a pink Korean norigae or Chinese Knot.

Creating Mira’s Pink Hair Look

One of Mira’s most recognizable features is her pink hair. Instead of committing to permanent dye, try temporary hair wax. Choose a vibrant pink shade and apply it evenly through your hair following the product instructions. We chose just to do the front part of the hair and the pig tails, but you could apply it to your whole head as well. It washed out easily with regular shampoo.

Style your hair with two half pigtails and front bang pieces to match Mira’s fun and energetic vibe. You can add more hair to the pigtail using pink hair extensions.

Embellishing Mira’s Black Choker Necklace

To add to Mira’s rockstar look, add a custom black choker necklace. Start with a simple black velvet choker or faux leather choker — you can find these at most accessory stores or online.

To give it that signature Mira sparkle, use a large faux gem or rhinestone in clear or iridescent white. Position the gem in the center of the choker and secure it with hot glue, pressing gently until it sets.

The result is a simple yet eye-catching piece that ties the whole costume together.
