Making Rumi’s Unique Yellow Jacket

In the opening number “How It’s Done”, Rumi’s wears a bold yellow jacket. You could look for a thrifted yellow bomber jacket, find one online, or make a yellow polar fleece bomber jacket like I did!

Using this Kwik Sew “Sewing for Children” pattern book from the 90’s (Thanks Mom!), I was able to make a custom yellow bomber jacket using yellow polar fleece and black ribbing.

My mom was a big help in putting this jacket together. She came over late one night with her serger (similar machine) and we were able to get the rough draft of the jacket made up, before adding the ribbing collar, zipper and all the badges.

Adding Custom Badges to Rumi’s Yellow Jacket

Did you know you can make your own badges just like those on Rumi’s yellow jacket?
I found a great Etsy store that has the Rumi Badge Designs (along with Mira’s t-shirt design!). Using some simple materials, along with Iron-On Transfer Paper for Dark Fabric, I was able to recreate the designs from the movie.

I suggest printing the designs on printer paper first and pinning them to the jacket, to double check the sizing.
Steps to Make Rumi’s Badges

1. Print the designs on Iron-On Transfer Paper for Dark Fabric, as per the package instructions. Cut out designs using good scissors. For more difficult pieces, use a utility craft knife.

2. Heat iron on the hottest setting, without any steam. *make sure there is no water in your iron before starting*
3. On a solid surface (not an ironing board), press yellow cotton fabric to remove any wrinkles. Iron on Heat n’ Bond Fusible Interface to the back of your fabric, as per the package instructions
4. Flip fabric over. Peel the backing off the badge designs and arrange on the good side of the yellow fabric. You may need to use tweezers to get the backing off of your design.

5. Cover the design with the teflon paper included in the iron transfer package. Iron the design onto the fabric, using heavy and even pressure, following the package instructions.
For these designs, I ironed for about 2 minutes on the highest heat setting, moving all around the covered part of my design. Then I repeated it on the next area of the badges. Remove teflon sheet and voila! Your design is done!

6. Using a Satin Stitch (or a very tight Zig Zag Stitch) on your sewing machine, stitch around the border of each badge in either yellow or black (depending on the design) Cut out finished badges with fabric scissors, being careful not to nick the stitches.
7. Sew Badges to your jacket, using a sewing machine, hand stitching or using fabric glue (depending on jacket fabric).

Creating Rumi’s Iconic Purple Braid Extension

One of Rumi’s most eye-catching features is her long purple braid. You can use a combination of temporary purple hair wax and purple hair extensions to create a voluminous braid that can be used again and again!

You can make a reusable Rumi Braid using a Dragon Braid Method. I’ll be sharing a video on how I did this braid, later this week!
To style your hair to make it easier to add the Purple Braid, you’ll make almost a bubble braid down your natural hair:
- Take a section at the front of your head and tie the hair into a small ponytail.
- Clip the ponytail out of the way.
- Take a new section of hair below the first one and tie the hair into a ponytail
- Take down the first ponytail and tie it together with the second ponytail
- Repeat steps 3 & 4 until there is no more hair to add to the ponytails
- When there is no more hair to add to the braid, go about an inch down the hair and add a hair elastic
- Repeat until you reach the end of the hair
Apply purple hair wax to the finished sections. The wax will also act as a gel to help with flyaways.

Pin the Purple Braid to the first ponytail section you made on your natural hair. continue to pin the braid to each ponytail section going down. You can use extra clear elastics to help attach the purple braid to your natural hair ponytail end.

Embellishing Rumi’s Shorts and Boots

Rumi wears dark, high-waisted shorts that have dark pink stripes up the sides and along the waistline. You can easily recreate this trendy look using denim shorts with dark pink craft felt.

Cut strips of dark pink craft felt using a rotary cutter, quilting ruler and cutting mat, or fabric scissors.

Using a sewing machine or hand stitching, apply the felt stripes to the waistband and sides of the shorts. I also added faux “belt loops” to the front of the shorts. Alternatively, you could use hot glue.
Add a Purple Korean Norigae or Chinese Knot to one side of the shorts.
