With both Valentine’s Day and Family Day, it felt like there was lots to celebrate on what would have otherwise been a regular cold winter weekend. Having those three days off really makes a difference when you’re in the middle of winter. It felt great to unplug for a bit and spend time with family and friends.

With Valentine’s Day on a work day, I knew I wouldn’t see Garrett until later Friday evening, so I packed him some goodies for lunch the night before, along with a little note. He said that opening the fridge at 5am to pack his lunch and spotting the note (along with a mini chocolate bar) was a good start to his day – just what I was going for.
When Garrett got home, he was super sweet and surprised me with new gold hoop earrings (love them) and the most beautiful bouquet of colourful flowers. They were so lush and vibrant.
How fun are these rainbow chrysanthemum?
I had a bunch of treats and surprises for him, but the one I was looking forward to the most was this Ice Box Cake using whipped cream made from coconut milk. It was unbelievably easy to make and tasted fantastic. I’ll be sharing the recipe tomorrow.
We stayed home for a bit, eating pizza and snuggling on the couch with our favourite pooch.
He really does know how to find the best snuggle spots.
Later in the evening, we went out ice skating at the outdoor rink and then to the movies to see Robocop. Like with most remakes, I had low expectations, but it was surprisingly good! I liked it even better than the original.

Saturday was visiting friends for a baby shower and doing the necessary weekend clean up. We did our wedding cake testing on Sunday (forgot to take pics!) and then headed over to my parents’ place for lunch. Both my brother and sister are home from university for reading week and I had the Monday off, so it was a great time to come up for a sleepover while Garrett had to work.
Whiskey was so happy to be able to curl up in front of the fireplace for a snooze between barking fits at all the squirrels.
Monday, Family Day, was bright and sunny, so we headed out to pick up coffees and teas and go down to the lake. We spotted this horsedrawn sleigh along the way.
The lake was full of people out in ice fishing huts and lots of trucks getting stuck in snow/ice. After all the news stories we hear every year about trucks getting stuck out on the ice, it always amazes me that people still take them out there.
We even spotted a plane making a landing on the ice.
We got back home last night, just in time to get things ready for the week. After all the excitement, Whiskey seems pretty happy to be staying home all cuddled up today while we’re at work. I just realized that every photo of him in this post shows him sleeping/snuggling/cuddling. I swear that he really does get some bursts of energy in the winter. Mostly from his bed for a quick washroom break outside and then right back to the warmth, but that counts. Hope you’re keeping warm today too.
