A Soft & Sweet Farmhouse Nursery

When we first found out that we were expecting our little Lucy, I couldn’t help but get excited at the idea of decorating a nursery. Back in the winter, I shared my nursery inspiration and it’s been an exciting process working together with Garrett to create this space for our baby girl.

The room is bright and spacious, and the perfect place to play with Lucy, change her and put her down for naps. I can see it growing with her as well as she gets older. I’m so happy with how it turned out! I’ve added a source list at the bottom if you’d like to know where something was from.

Before it was a nursery, this third bedroom upstairs was our storage space since we moved in last year. We had so much stuff that we’d brought with us that we didn’t really need, so it all started with a huge purge. We donated, sold or found a better location for everything that was in this room so we could start with a clean slate. Thankfully the room was already painted a nice light grey with white trim that we liked, so that saved us lots of time repainting.

The floor is a beige linoleum, which I would have loved to have changed, but we know that we’d like to redo all the flooring upstairs someday at the same time, so we opted for a large area rug for now.

We were able to go to our local carpeting store and get a custom area rug made for the room at a fraction of the cost. A huge 8′ x 10′ rug can cost a fortune, but by using carpet we were able to get it bound and delivered for under $250. We picked “San Marino III” by a great Canadian company, Beaulieu Canada, because it has specks of blue and pink in it, lending itself well to future updates to the space.

The old light was dull and dingy, so we knew that we wanted to change that out too. We found a large drum light at IKEA that fit the room perfectly. It gives the room a nice glow without being glaring. We like it so much that we’ve already bought another one for when we decorate our bedroom soon.

The light switch and cover was an old yellowy colour, so we decided to switch it to a new white one and added a dimmer switch while we were at it. It’s really nice to be able to turn on her lights for a diaper change in the middle of the night and keep the lights low to not wake her up.

On the right side of her nursery, we have her dresser and crib.

Garrett did a fantastic job painting the dresser – you wouldn’t believe what it looked like before! When we were looking for a dresser for her room, we knew it needed to be deep enough to hold a changing pad and long enough to set out all the things we’d need for diaper changes. I started looking at new ones and couldn’t believe how expensive they were.  I was so glad we were able to find this used one in our town for $25 and just paint it.

I keep her diapers in this cute baby chick canvas pail, with the wipes and lotions in another container beside them. The Peter Rabbit toy is from the Beatrix Potter Baby Shower my mother and mother-in-law threw me back in May, and the little booties are the “stockings” my mom had hanging on our tree last Christmas for Lucy.

On the other side of the room, we keep this hamper by the door for laundry and this HUGE teddy bear that my sister-in-law gave Lucy at the baby shower. This thing is a magnet for kids. No one can come into that room and resist hugging it.

The dogs love to hang out in the nursery with us, especially Whiskey. He has been so good about getting up with me for every late night feeding and diaper change. If she is on the floor playing, he always has to be watching nearby.

Beside the dresser we have her crib that my parents gave us as a gift. We chose a white finish to help it fit in with the rest of our upstairs decor and to keep it neutral for any other future kiddos.

Right now Lucy has been sleeping in a bassinet in our room and only having naps in her crib, but so far she loves it. The crib has an organic mattress that can be flipped over to be a toddler mattress and the crib itself converts into a toddler bed and then a twin bed frame.

While I was on maternity leave and anxiously awaiting Lucy’s arrival, I handstitched this stuffed bunny mobile to hang above her crib, using inspiration from the images on the cupcake picks at the baby shower. I’ll be sharing a tutorial on this soon!

Our little sweetie already likes to watch the little bunnies dance around in the breeze.

The organic cotton Peter Rabbit crib sheet was a surprise from my mom and I absolutely love them. So sweet and incredibly soft. (Also…that smile…makes me melt every time)

On the other side of the room we have her ever growing bookshelf of toys and books, and a nice cozy spot to rock her and read stories. We’ve put up blackout roller blinds on the windows, with pom pom trimmed valances I made. (tutorial coming soon!)

As I mentioned in the nursery inspiration post, this rocking chair is the same one my mother used with me and all my siblings. For years it sat on my great grandmother’s veranda until she passed away around the time I was born. It was the only thing my dad asked for from the house, and he lovingly removed layers upon layers of paint to refinish it. I was able to find some plush new rocking chair pads with a linen-like material to make it a little more comfortable for those long late night feedings.It’s crazy to think that Lucy is the fifth generation to sit in it! I found a large knit poof that works perfectly as a footrest (or for one of the dogs to sit on and join us).

On the bookshelf, we have a great mix of gifts for Lucy and sentimental things from our own childhoods, like Garrett’s childhood bear I fixed up for him while I was pregnant. The Eeyore is a handmade gift sent over by my cousins in England, complete with a little tail on a button that comes off.

The shelf also holds a little box with all the mementoes so far – her hospital bracelets, ultrasounds and little bits and bobs. The folks at UncommonGoods sent us some beautiful things to add to her nursery, including these adorable, felt Strawberry Shortcake Booties! I cannot wait for her to wear them. One of the things I love most about this company is that not only do they have really unique baby gift ideas but they also tell you who the maker is, like Gulnara Kydryrmyshova from Kyrgyzstan who made these beautiful handmade booties.

These retro-inspired Wooden Alphabet Blocks from UncommonGoods fit in perfectly with our farmhouse decor. I love that they’re handcrafted in Michigan with basswood from the Great Lakes region and printed with non-toxic inks. They also have them in braille, sign language, nursery rhymes and even the periodic table!

Now that we have a little baby that likes to put everything in her mouth, I realize how important it is to have toys that I feel comfortable with her playing with. These Organic Cotton Vegetable Teethers are handmade with 100% organic Egyptian cotton, so I feel much better about her gnawing away at them. Plus they’re so cute and just what every little farm girl needs.

Lucy is already two and a half months and loves to be on her tummy playing with toys and reading books. We have been given some beautiful handmade blankets that are perfect for a little tummy time while we read some stories. She loves any books that are colourful, especially these great ones that UncommonGoods sent us. They have some great ideas for baby shower gifts too.

After months of anticipation, it’s so great to finally have our little Lucy here in this room to create so many great memories together.
