Whenever I ask my mom what she’d like for Mother’s Day, her response is always “I don’t need anything”. Which I know isn’t true, but rather than go the traditional flowers and card route, I like to find something different to celebrate how awesome she is. What better than a gift that comes from the heart, that you made with your own two hands? I’m not talking about a macaroni necklace like you gave her as a kid – although I do recall my mother wearing some of my odd jewelry creations with pride. These are all gifts that she can use, especially with the nicer weather on the way.
This Lined Tote Bag is one of my favourite projects that I’ve ever done. It’s so bright and cheerful and easy to make for even a sewing beginner. It’s the perfect size for going to the store, popping into the library or heading to the beach. For the summer-lovin’ mama, fill up the bag with beach essentials – a magazine, book, a fluffy beach towel, funky sunglasses and a new pair of flip flops.
These Salad Planters are so handy to have out on a porch. You can pick the lettuces and herbs she likes and then she can pick them salads whenever she likes! Be sure to add in some fun edible flowers too.
Warmer weather always makes me think of picnic season. My family loves heading out on picnics, whether it’s picking up takeout to enjoy on the beach or packing up sandwiches to have in a park in the city. If you can score an old picnic basket like this one, it would look so cute with some Frayed Gingham Picnic Napkins, plastic cups, plates and utensils…and toss in some of her favourite picnic snack foods too.
I made these Hand Painted Vintage Striped Tea Towels for my mom’s birthday last year. You can using any acrylic paint colour you like and mix it with the fabric paint medium, making a custom tea towel to match mom’s kitchen.
If you’re feeling the itch to paint, try this Easy Cutlery Art project. Easy to make and super fun to do. Better yet – plan a painting date with your mom and make them together, or head out to a studio with classes.
If your mom is into yoga or pilates, make her a Yoga Bag to match her mat. Add pockets, loops or space for a yoga block, making it easier for her to take everything to the studio. Namaste!
These DIY Painted Cork Coasters are another project that I did for my mom last year and they are still holding up really well. I did a leaf design to go with the patterns on her deck furniture, but you could get creative and do whatever style you think she’d like.
