Despite the crazy heatwave we had again this weekend, you can still feel that fall is quickly approaching here in Ontario. The leaves are beginning to change, the days are getting shorter and the birds are starting to fly South.
This is our last month or so as a family of three and I put together a list of some fun autumn activities we can do to spice up the season.
- Apple picking at our neighbour’s orchard
- Make some of our favourite apple recipes – Applesauce, Glazed Apple Pie Bars and Cranberry Apple Cinnamon Baked Oatmeal
- Hikes and car rides to see the changing leaves
- Visit a local Harvest Festival
- Make Pumpkin Spice Play Dough
- Dig out all our fall themed books (we love this one, this one, and this one)
- Backyard bonfire with s’mores (or bake S’more Cookie Bars)
- Make Pumpkin Arrangements for Canadian Thanksgiving
- Create a Painted Leaves Mobile
- Open up the windows for fresh crisp fall air
- Knit a Fall Scarf
- Watching Hocus Pocus just us adults (hard to believe it’s already the 25th anniversary and that it’s been five years since our trip to Salem when I wrote about our Hocus Pocus Self-Guided Walking Tour!)
- Decorate the front porch with fall planters (here it is the year we moved in)
- Make my sister’s Pumpkin Spice Whoopie Pies with Maple Cream Cheese Filling (or better yet convince her to make them for Thanksgiving)
- Plant garlic in the vegetable patch
- Cuddle up on the couch and watch classic Halloween cartoons with Lucy, like Ichabod Crane, Charlie Brown and my childhood favourite – Trick or Treat with Donald Duck
- Get lost in a Corn Maze
- Bake Gingersnap Cookies to give to others
- Swap out our summer clothes for cozy sweaters
- Warm up with homemade soups – Classic French Onion, Slow Cooker Butternut Squash and Parsnip Soup and Apple Cheddar Soup
- Visit a local Pumpkin Patch
- Spiced Apple Cider on the front porch
- Carve pumpkins (and Bake Pumpkin Seeds for Mama…yum!)
- Make Halloween costumes
- And last but definitely not least….welcome our new baby to the family!

I think I’m going to have to try those whoopee pies! YUM! ANd thanks for this list. If I end up with my nieces over fall break I might do some of these things.
